MERIT AWARD FOR HERITAGE
The Churchill is distinguished as a venerable heritage redevelopment of a once under-utilized and derelict asset which has been re-gentrified; preserving the old world features and charm of the building. The white terra-cotta bricks, exclusive to late 19th century-early 20th century times, were stripped of paint, repaired and re-pointed. On the exterior, sheet metal cornices were custom designed and positioned to replicate what was once a defining feature of 719 Yates. Additionally, metal clad exterior wall panels and mouldings were rebuilt between windows to reflect an original feature. The original windows were refurbished and reused to maintain a valued original appearance and concrete remediation was done to the window sills. Today, The Churchill represents a catalyst for sustainable redevelopment and provides the city with affordable rental housing and an admirable building of the historic past. New construction components feature water conservation toilets, energy smart appliances, energy efficient lighting, and a $1 million seismic upgrade.
