VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD GREEN AWARD
This $23 million project consists of a two storey hybrid glulam, structural steel and tilt-up concrete building. The new replacement middle school includes classrooms, gymnasium, theatre auditorium, multi-purpose room, music and applied industrial arts room and administration offices. The site works consists of playing fields, hard and soft landscaping and on-site/off-site services work. It was conceived from the beginning as a ‘Green Building’ – a LEED Gold project.
The building’s orientation maximizes available natural light while limiting glazing on the south to minimize solar gain. It exceeds Model National Energy Code by over 35% through use of building automation, energy efficient T5 lighting technology, geothermal heat-pump and solar hot water systems. Low water consumption plumbing fixtures have been included as well as an integrated storm water management program of underground detention and green parking bioswales.
The expectation is that by providing a more dynamic, healthier environment, the building itself can better support the students’ learning and demonstrate environmental design principles. At the time of its completion, this school was also being operated in partnership with the Peninsula Recreation Commission, the Town of Sidney and the Municipality of North Saanich to provide increased recreational and educational programs in the evenings or weekends.
