EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR COMMUNITY – RECREATION
This $14,152,400 project was made possible through a Building Canada Fund grant involving the City of Langford and the Federal and Provincial governments and includes Langford Lanes, a 20-lane family bowling centre, and Westhills Arena. Langford Lanes is the only 10-pin bowling centre in the Capital Region, and includes a restaurant and six-lane section with refreshment bar. The National Hockey League size ice arena includes seating for 500 and features an innovative ice river that connects the arena to the existing outdoor skating area at City Centre Park.
The building was the first of its kind in Canada to use advanced technology that recycles 100% of the waste heat from ice production to heat the entirety of the bowling alley and building facility and it is also connected to the Westhills development’s geothermal energy plant. This project specifically answered the needs and requests of the community of Langford as noted through the City’s Official Community Plan process in the few years preceding development. Durable and long lasting materials such as heavy wood timbers, river rock and corrugated metal present a seamless fusion of west coast and commercial/institutional design.
