The new Belmont Secondary School is home to 1,200 grade 9-12 students. Its prominent location links to an established community to a rapidly growing area.
Belmont Secondary supports current and forward looking education best practices.The principal academic spaces are each home to approximately 150 students. These smaller units personalize learning, assist collaboration and cross curricular teaching as well as reduce student isolation. The physical environment is designed to transform by means of overhead doors and moveable walls.
The building is targeting LEED Gold Certification, incorporating the optimized energy performance of a mechanical system based on an air-source heat pump and displacement ventilation. The sun-filled atrium provides opportunities for passive ventilation and heat recovery. Other green initiatives include reduced heat island effect, water efficient landscaping, use of regional landscaping, use of regional and recycled materials, a high standard of indoor air quality and measures for a durable building including wood structural elements in the major social areas.
